The CNBC at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) maintains its own computer facilities that provide faculty, staff and students with support, access to state of the art equipment and high-speed network access.

The Center maintains multiple servers that are located in the CNBC machine room. All servers have redundant power supplies and Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS) ensuring connectivity for several hours without power. A 70TB, enterprise grade, RAID6, disk storage system provides space for users to store their data. They can access the files from their local computer using CMU's network. The files are incrementally backed up to a separate server and saved for 3 months. A server with 40TBs of RAID 5 enterprise grade disk storage space was installed in October 2014 to provide the CNBC with desktop/laptop file incremental backup using CrashPlan PROe software, a multi-platform (MacOS, Windows, Linux, Solaris) enterprise solution. In June 2016, a 100TB , enterprise grade, disk storage system using zfs RAID6 was built to store the MICrONs project data, a project funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA).

The CNBC Cluster is shared with the CMU's Psychology Department and is located in the CMU School of Computer Science (SCS) machine room. The SCS Facility has 24/7 support and a team of HPC experts that works closely with the CNBC computing administrator. Currently the cluster is a two, 19" rack system, with power distribution units and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) protecting the essential components from primary power source loss. The cluster consists of 30 nodes, 416 CPUs and 24 Nvidia GeForce Titan X 12GB cards used for GPU processing. These resources are used for research, imaging, modeling, and simulations. The cluster was initially built in July 2010 and upgraded in July 2012. In June 2015, the cluster was reconfigured, upgraded and merged with the CMU Psychology Department's cluster. In June of 2016 a second rack, PDU, Ethernet and Infintiband switches were added to accommodate expanding the cluster. The upgrade included 3 new nodes with 4 GPU processing cards in each. In January 2017, 3 GPU nodes were added each with 4 x Nvidia GeForce Titan X Maxwell 12GB GDDR5 384-bit PCI Express 3.0 (250W). The combined system now includes a total of 85 terabytes of shared disk space and 1.8 terabytes of RAM. Each node is connected via Quad Data Rate (QDR) Infiniband and the cluster is accessible through the Carnegie Mellon University network. The core operating system of the cluster is ROCKS+, a CentOS-based operating system with specialized packages for parallel and distributed computing. This operating system allows for a flexible, stable working environment for the machine’s core applications. Portable Batch System (PBS) is used for job scheduling and to allocate computational tasks, (i.e., batch jobs) among the available CPU computing nodes. The SLURM Workload Manager is used for GPU resource allocation and batch job scheduling. Users' home directories are incrementally backup up to the SCS's tape backup system. The two data partitions are configured using RAID 6 and the ZFS file system. The data partitions have snapshots enabled and each are replicated onto an identical RAID 6 volume for additional protection.

The combined 30 compute node cluster system includes a total of 568 CPUs, 32 GPU cards, 85 terabytes of shared disk space and 2.4 terabytes of RAM. Components are connected via high speed Infiniband network and the cluster is accessible through the Carnegie Mellon University Ethernet network. The CentOS operating system allows for a flexible, stable working environment for the machine’s core applications. We currently use Portable Batch System (PBS) for job scheduling and to allocate computational tasks, (i.e., batch jobs) among the available CPU computing nodes. If you are interested in using the CNBC cluster for computational research, please contact David. A small maintenance fee is associated with access to the cluster and helps the CNBC make software and hardware improvements as advances in technology occur.

The Computing Facilities are a 100% recharge center, meaning that the costs we recover from users is expected to support the ongoing costs of operation. We therefore charge annual fees to recover the costs of providing these services, which include ongoing costs to pay for power and maintain the cluster as well as salary for staff. The cluster is kept up to date and maintained by SCS Facilities. David Pane, Manager of Computational Resources for the NI, is on hand to answer any questions, handle problems and request(s) for software and to support our users. David maintains a website with basic information about the cluster services, a description of the cluster, policies and procedures.

The fees assessed for access to computational support generally come close to recovering the ongoing costs of operating the Computing Center; however, they do not support any capital investment in the Cluster. Many of the computational nodes and storage making up the Cluster were purchased by PIs using grant or startup funds, as there is no budget specifically for upgrading the Cluster infrastructure. Given that these resources age rapidly, we rely on users to invest in hardware regularly to keep the Cluster operational.

The CNBC at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) maintains its own computer facilities that provide faculty, staff and students with support, access to state of the art equipment and high-speed network access.

The Center maintains multiple servers that are located in the CNBC machine room. All servers have redundant power supplies and Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS) ensuringconnectivity for several hours without power. A 70TB, enterprise grade, RAID6, disk storage system provides space for users to store their data. They can access the files from their local computer using CMU's network. The files are incrementally backed up to a separate server and saved for 3 months. A server with 40TBs of RAID 5 enterprise grade disk storage space was installed in October 2014 to provide the CNBC with desktop/laptop file incremental backup using CrashPlan PROe software, a multi-platform (MacOS, Windows, Linux, Solaris) enterprise solution. In June 2016, a 100TB , enterprise grade, disk storage system using zfs RAID6 was built to store the MICrONs project data, a project funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA).

The CNBC Cluster is shared with the CMU's Psychology Department and is located in the CMU School of Computer Science (SCS) machine room. The SCS Facility has 24/7 support and a team of HPC expertsthat works closely with the CNBC computing administrator. Currently the cluster is a two, 19" rack system, with power distribution units and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) protecting the essential components from primary power source loss. The cluster consists of 27 nodes, 392 CPUs and 12 Nvidia GeForce Titan X 12GB cards used for GPU processing. These resources are used for research, imaging, modeling, and simulations. The cluster was initially built in July 2010 and upgraded in July 2012. In June 2015, the cluster was reconfigured, upgraded and merged with the CMU Psychology Department's cluster. The most recent upgrade occurred in June of 2016 when a second rack, PDU, Ethernet and Infintiband switches were added to accommodate expanding the cluster. The upgrade also included 3 new nodes with 4 GPU processing cards in each. The combined system now includes a total of 85 terabytes of shared disk space and 1.6 terabytes of RAM. Each node is connected via Quad Data Rate (QDR) Infiniband and the cluster is accessible through the Carnegie Mellon University network. The core operating system of the cluster is ROCKS+, a CentOS-based operating system with specialized packages for parallel and distributed computing. This operating system allows for a flexible, stable working environment for the machine’s core applications. Portable Batch System (PBS) is used for job scheduling and to allocate computational tasks, (i.e., batch jobs) among the available computing resources. Users' home directories are incrementally backup up to the SCS's tape backup system. The data partition is configured using RAID 6 and the ZFS file system with snapshots enabled for additional data protection.

In January 2017, 3 GPU nodes were added each with 4 x Nvidia GeForce Titan X Maxwell 12GB GDDR5 384-bit PCI Express 3.0 (250W). Each node is connected via Quad Data Rate (QDR) Infiniband and the cluster is accessible through the Carnegie Mellon University network. The core operating system of the cluster is ROCKS+, a CentOS-based operating system with specialized packages for parallel and distributed computing. The core operating system of the cluster is ROCKS+, a CentOS-based operating system with specialized packages for parallel and distributed computing. This operating system allows for a flexible, stable working environment for many of the machine’s core applications. Portable Batch System (PBS) is used for job scheduling and to allocate computational tasks, (i.e., batch jobs) among the available computing resources. User's home directories are incrementally backup up to the SCS's tape backup system. The SCS Facility has 24/7 support and a team of HPC expertsthat works closely with the CNBC computing administrator. Currently the cluster is a two, 19" rack system, with power distribution units and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) protecting the essential components from primary power source loss. The cluster consists of 27 nodes, 392 CPUs and 12 Nvidia GeForce Titan X 12GB cards used for GPU processing. These resources are used for research, imaging, modeling, and simulations. The cluster was initially built in July 2010 and upgraded in July 2012. In June 2015, the cluster was reconfigured, upgraded and merged with the CMU Psychology Department's cluster. The most recent upgrade occurred in June of 2016 when a second rack, PDU, Ethernet and Infintiband switches were added to accommodate expanding the cluster. The upgrade also included 3 new nodes with 4 GPU processing cards in each. The combined system now includes a total of 85 terabytes of shared disk space and 1.6 terabytes of RAM. Each node is connected via Quad Data Rate (QDR) Infiniband and the cluster is accessible through the Carnegie Mellon University network. The CNBC at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) maintains its own computer facilities that provide faculty, staff and students with access to state of the art equipment and high-speed network access. The CNBC Cluster is shared with the CMU's Psychology Department and is located in the CMU School of Computer Science (SCS) machine room. The SCS Facilities has 24/7 support and a team of HPC expertise that works closely with CNBC computing administrator. Currently the cluster is a 19" rack system, with Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) and a power distribution unit. It consists of 24 nodes, 320 CPUs, and is used for research, imaging, modeling, and simulations. The cluster was initially built in July 2010, upgraded in July 2012, and reconfigured, upgraded and merged with the CMU's Psychology Department's cluster in June 2015. The combined system now has a total of 85 terabytes of shared disk space and 1.2 terabytes of RAM. Each node is connected via Quad Data Rate (QDR) Infiniband and the cluster is accessible through the Carnegie Mellon University network. The CNBC maintains a centralized file server which is located in the CNBC machine room and users can access the files stored on this server from their local computer using CMU's network. Both the file server and the backup server have redundant power supplies, 70 terabytes of RAID 6 storage, and a backup power system that ensures connectivity for several hours without power. A separate centralized server to support CNBC desktop/laptop file incremental backup was installed in October 2014. The server has redundant power, 40TBs of RAID 5 enterprise grade disk storage. The supported multi-platform (MacOS, Windows, Linux, Solaris) software being used is CrashPlan PROe.

The CNBC at Carnegie Mellon maintains its own computer facilities that provide faculty, staff and students with computing support and local access to state of the art equipment and high-speed network access. The CNBC Cluster, named Sparrowhawk, is a 15-node, 180-core cluster, used for research, imaging, modeling, and simulations. Built in July of 2010 and upgraded in July of 2012, the system has 55 terabytes of shared disk space and 896 gigabytes of RAM. Each node is connected via QDR (Quad Data Rate) Infiniband and is accessible through the Carnegie Mellon University network. The core operating system of the cluster is ROCKS+, a CentOS-based operating system with specialized packages for parallel and distributed computing. This operating system allows for a flexible, stable working environment for many of the machine's core applications.

In addition to the cluster, the CNBC also offers a centralized storage and backup system that incrementally backs up all stored data for 1 week. This system features redundant power supplies, 66 terabytes of RAID storage, and a backup power system that ensures connectivity for several hours without power.

CNBC recently installed a new centralized server for CNBC desktop file incremental backup with a server that has redundant power, 40TBs of RAID 5 enterprise grade disk storage. The supported multi-platform (MacOS, Windows, Linux, Solaris) software being used is CrashPlan PROe.

CNBC Computing is in the process of make the following improvements and additions to our computing facilities.

  • Cluster: Merge CNBC and Psychology clusters which will increase node count to: 1 head node; 1 teaching node; 22 processing nodes; install 65 TB RAID6 enterprise grade disk storage with an additional 65TB RAID6 enterprise grade disk storage for cluster data backup. The Cluster will be located on Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science computing Facilities with 24/7 support and a team of HPC expertise who will work with CNBC computing administrator.
  • File Server: Upgrade file server (raptor) to 65TB of RAID 6 enterprise grade disk storage.
  • File Server Backup: Upgrade backup server (delorean) 73TB of RAID6 enterprise grade disk storage.

The CNBC at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) maintains its own computer facilities that provide faculty, staff and students with access to state of the art equipment and high-speed network access. The CNBC Cluster is shared with the CMU's Psychology Department and is located in the CMU School of Computer Science (SCS) machine room. The SCS Facilities has 24/7 support and a team of HPC expertise that works closely with CNBC computing administrator. Currently the cluster is a 19" rack system, with Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) and a power distribution unit. It consists of 24 nodes, 320 CPUs, and is used for research, imaging, modeling, and simulations. The cluster was initially built in July 2010, upgraded in July 2012, and reconfigured, upgraded and merged with the CMU's Psychology Department's cluster in June 2015. The combined system now has a total of 85 terabytes of shared disk space and 1.2 terabytes of RAM. Each node is connected via Quad Data Rate (QDR) Infiniband and the cluster is accessible through the Carnegie Mellon University network. The core operating system of the cluster is ROCKS+, a CentOS-based operating system with specialized packages for parallel and distributed computing. This operating system allows for a flexible, stable working environment for many of the machine’s core applications. Portable Batch System (PBS) is used for job scheduling and to allocate computational tasks, (i.e., batch jobs) among the available computing resources. User's home directories are incrementally backup up to the SCS's tape backup system. The data partition is configured using RAID 6 and the ZFS file system with snapshots enabled for additional data protection.

The CNBC maintains a centralized file server which is located in the CNBC machine room and users can access the files stored on this server from their local computer using CMU's network. The files are incrementally backed up to a separate server and saved for 3 months. Both the file server and the backup server have redundant power supplies, 70 terabytes of RAID 6 storage, and a backup power system that ensures connectivity for several hours without power. A separate centralized server to support CNBC desktop/laptop file incremental backup was installed in October 2014. The server has redundant power, 40TBs of RAID 5 enterprise grade disk storage. The supported multi-platform (MacOS, Windows, Linux, Solaris) software being used is CrashPlan PROe.
